Friendship backs Safe as Houses campaign
With more than 3,600 homes across Birmingham, Warwickshire,
Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, leicestershire and
Worcestershire, social landlord Friendship Care and Housing
(Friendship) has pledged its support to the Inside Housing’s Safe
as Houses campaign.
Managing Director, Jonathan Driffill signed the online
petition: “Friendship is committed to make communities better and
safer places to live and I’m only too pleased to back this
worthwhile campaign.”
The campaign was launched at the end of
September following the tragic fire in July at the Lakanal House
tower block in south London. The fire broke out on the ninth
floor and resulted in six people dying, including three
children.
Inside Housing hopes to dramatically reduce
the likelihood of future, similar tragedies by getting 100 social
landlords to support the introduction of three simple steps to stop
preventable deaths from gas and fire:
· Change
building regulations to require carbon monoxide detectors to be
hardwired into new home with gas appliances
· Put up
emergency procedure notices in every corridor of a high-rise
block
· Set up a
national database of all UK tower blocks
