Older People's Services
We run a care home for older people in Balsall
Heath, Birmingham. The home is culturally-dedicated – that
is, it is particularly sensitive to the culture and background to
particular ethnic group, in this case older people with an African
Caribbean heritage. For example, the menus, leisure and
social activities all reflect this background.
The service is not a traditional old people’s
home. It was established after consultation with our older
African Caribbean tenants, service users and through face-to-face
surveys with local African Caribbean people, community
groups and churches. Its unique design has 20 self contained
flats suitable for wheelchair users, with intensive staff available
24 hours a day.
Staff are involved with all aspects of care
including personal hygiene, help with dressings, administration of
medicines and mobility, cleaning, preparing and serving
meals. Even with this intensive support, we make sure that we
have time to talk and listen to our residents.
We also have a respite facility, which offers
a temporary home from home for someone while their main carer takes
a short break.
